Cosmetic Plastic Surgery In New York City:
Rhinoplasty (Nose Job)
As the face’s most prominent feature, there really is no way to conceal the nose from others. If you’re self-conscious about the size, shape or overall appearance of their nose, Rhinoplasty (also known as a Nose Job or Nose Shaping) may be right for you.
Rhinoplasty (Nose Shaping/Nose Job)
Nose shaping presents a unique set of challenges for each individual, and not everyone is a good candidate for the surgery. As one of the most difficult surgeries to perform, Rhinoplasty requires the Surgeon to detailed discussion about the patient’s goals, the necessary surgical steps, and careful selection of techniques that will help rectify issues such as:
Disproportionate size – noses that are too large or small for the face
Bumps (also known as a hump or knuckle) on the bridge of the nose
Wideness
Crookedness resulting from trauma to the nose
Asymmetry which can be either from trauma as an inherited trait
Soft tissue problems in the form of a defect at the tip or nostrils or nasal tips that droop or are enlarged
Flared nostrils
Pleasing results can be achieved with careful selection and detailed technique. I perform most nose surgeries through an open approach which requires an incision hidden beneath the tip of the nose, in the Columella, which separates the nostrils.
There are four basic steps to shaping the nose:
Altering the cartilage support for the skin
Shaping the bone of the nose – shaving the bump and narrowing the width
Adding cartilage to shape the nose
Reducing the size of the nostrils
The skin is elevated off the underlying cartilage and the cartilages are altered to change the shape of the nose. The tip of the nose may need a cartilage graft- taken for the ear or the midline of the nose (septum). The bone is shaved with a rasp/file and possibly the nasal bones are pushed in (or fractured) to narrow the shape and make it more in line with the shape of the eyebrows. A small ellipse of skin may be removed on the nostril (Weir excision) to make the nostrils smaller. Small adhesives are placed over the nose and rarely a splint. The nostrils are not packed.
Preparation As with all surgeries performed by Dr. Born, patients are prescribed supplements to take before and after the surgery, to help prepare and recover faster and without complications.
Recovery No antibiotics are prescribed for Rhinoplasty. Patients can return to normal activities, with the exception of heavy exercise, five days after surgery. Small stitches are removed four days after surgery. There will be some bruising for three to ten days and swelling which will improve over the next three weeks and ongoing changes that you will notice over the next four months. Smaller gradual changes will occur over the next year and a half following surgery.
There are some general risks intrinsic to all surgical procedures; please take a moment to review them.
The Result The final result of Rhinoplasty is overall improvement of the aesthetics of the nose in its shape, size and symmetry.
It is important to note that each surgery is tailored to meet the unique needs and features of individual patients.
What other patients want Many patients combine Rhinoplasty with other facial rejuvenating procedures such as Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery), Brow Lift, or Body Contouring to achieve an overall enhancement of their appearance.
