Cosmetic Plastic Surgery In New York City:
Lip Augmentation Injections
Society has placed such an emphasis on thick, full, “bee-stung” lips, that there is even a derogatory name for those not blessed with them – chicken lips. Ironically, in the 2004 film Troy, an actor known for having very full lips played Achilles, a character whose name literally means “lipless”. It appears that even the handsomest and strongest warrior in literature needed an upgrade.
What many of us do not realize is that a good number of the celebrities we admire today did not always have the lips we wish we had – they got a little help from something called Lip Augmentation.
Lip Augmentation
To attain the best results, Lip Augmentation requires a lot of experience. For 11 years, both women and men have come to Dr. Born to contour their lips with various fillers, such as:
- Restylane
- Restylane Fine Lines
- Juvederm
- Artecol
- Artefill
- Evolence
- Evolence Breeze
- Collagen
- Micro-Fat Grafting
There are several factors in determining the technique, the type of filler, and the results:
- Original lip size and shape
- The position of the lips on the teeth
- The shape and position of the teeth ( upper and lower)
- The shape of the chin
- The volume changes around the lips and mouth
- Previous scars
- The patient’s goals
The goal is create a lip shape that is natural and fits the profile and contour of the patient’s face, and not an obvious example of cosmetic enhancement.
Not everyone can end up with the full, pouty lips, nor does everyone want a very full lip. The goal may simply be to define the edge of the lip, which decreases with age and develops fine vertical lines that cause lipstick to bleed. Others may want to add general fullness, or to give the lips a very full and pouty shape. The choice of shape will be discussed with the patient.
Procedure length
Lip Augmentation varies for each patient and is performed using a local anesthetic. Other injection or operative procedures may be done at the same time. Lip Augmentation may take more than one treatment, and a combination of procedures and fillers – including BOTOXCosmetic®, which may be used for enhancement, and to achieve the desired results. Patients may choose non-permanent fillers such as Restylane or Evolence to see if they like the results, and switch to a longer lasting filler at a later date.
Preparation
As with all surgeries performed by Dr. Born, patients are prescribed supplements to take before and after the surgery, to help prepare and recover faster and without complications.
Recovery
There may be swelling for three to five days and some bruising which can last up to 10 days after the procedure. Cold packs may be applied for 20-minute intervals for the first two days, and for some people, antihistamines may help reduce the swelling.
What other patients want
Many patients combine Lip Augmentation with procedures such as a Face Lift, Blepharoplasty or Body Contouring to achieve an overall enhancement of their appearance.
