Soft Tissue (Injectable) Fillers can be used to rejuvenate appearance, as in a ‘Non-Surgical Eyelid Lift’, restore general facial volume to provide a ‘Non-Surgical Face Lift’, and enhance facial contours such as the Cheekbones, Chin, Jaw line, and Brow. Fillers can even be used to improve the shape of the nose in lieu of Rhinoplasty.
Each Injectable Filler has unique properties designed to enhance facial contours and/or restore skin to a more youthful appearance. You may recognize them by their brand names:
Some patients would like to see the results they can achieve with Injectable Fillers before proceeding to a more permanent surgical solution like Micro-Fat Grafting, a Face Lift or Eye-Lid Surgery. Since 2000, Dr. Born has used Restylane and Perlane to assist patients who favour contouring without surgery and in the last two years has started using longer lasting fillers such as Sculptra and Radiesse.
Fillers are an excellent choice for individuals who need last minute precision contouring for an event, or for people who are not surgical candidates for medical reasons, or for people who require some minor correction to their surgical results while healing. Complications from Injectable Fillers are very uncommon and reactions to the products are rare. Contouring procedures may require more than one visit.
Cheek Augmentation Many patients combine Cheek Augmentation with a ‘Non-Surgical Eyelid Lift’ – using Restylane with or without Sculptra or Radiesse. The area is frozen with a local anaesthetic similar to the kind used by dentists. The filler is injected to achieve a ‘natural contour’. There may be swelling for 3 to 5 days and bruising up to 10 days. The results are assessed at a later date to determine if a touch of additional filler is required. It is best to balance the contours of the cheeks with the eyebrow contour and the shape and projection of the chin. This allows for a more balanced result and a softer and more youthful appearance.
The length of time for the result will vary depending on the type of filler used. Sculptra will last two to three years, Radiesse will last a year or more, Restylane can last eight months to a year and a half.
Chin Augmentation The approach to using Injectable Fillers for Chin Augmentation is similar to the cheeks. The Chin may be given more length to make the face and chin look longer, and/or may be given more projection (pushed forward) to match the projection of the nose. In both cases the chin can be made to appear ‘stronger’ without making it look ‘big’.
Nose Shaping The nose can be shaped with the various fillers for results similar to surgery. Fillers can be used to disguise the bump, give the nose better projection, hide defects or irregular contours resulting from previous nose surgery, or even provide more symmetry or make the nose look narrower. The results last about as long as the Cheek and Chin shaping.
